Weight, shape, grip size, core thickness, surface, comfort, power, and control — what each one means and how it shapes the way a paddle plays.
Weight
Weight affects how quickly a paddle moves through the air, how stable it feels at contact, and how much momentum it carries into the ball.
As a rough reference, many performance paddles weigh around 7.6–8.3 oz (215–235 g), although lighter and heavier options are available. There is no official weight limit under USA Pickleball rules.
Lighter paddles are generally easier to maneuver, which can help with quick reactions and fast exchanges at the net. Heavier paddles can provide more stability and power through contact, but require more effort to swing and reposition.
Weight alone doesn't determine how heavy a paddle feels during play. Where that weight is distributed also matters, which is why two paddles with the same listed weight can feel noticeably different when you swing them.
Shape
Paddle shape affects reach, maneuverability, sweet spot, and how the paddle feels through the swing.
Standard and widebody shapes generally provide a broader hitting area and a more forgiving sweet spot. Their compact shape can also make them easier to maneuver during quick exchanges at the net.
Elongated paddles provide additional reach and can increase leverage and power potential. The tradeoff is usually a narrower hitting area and slower maneuverability compared with a wider, more compact paddle.
Hybrid shapes sit between the two and are designed to offer a balance of reach, forgiveness, and maneuverability.
USA Pickleball limits paddle length to 17 inches, while the combined length and width cannot exceed 24 inches.
Grip size
Grip size is the circumference of the paddle handle and affects how securely and comfortably the paddle sits in your hand.
A smaller grip can make it easier to use the wrist and adjust the paddle quickly, but a grip that's too small may feel less secure. A larger grip can provide a fuller feel in the hand, but one that's too large may make the paddle harder to maneuver comfortably.
If you're between sizes, starting with the smaller grip is usually easier to adjust because an overgrip can add thickness.
Handle length matters too. A longer handle provides more room for players who use a two-handed backhand, while a shorter handle can allow more of the paddle's overall length to be used for the hitting surface.
Core thickness
Core thickness influences how a paddle responds when the ball makes contact.
Thinner cores — commonly around 13–14 mm — tend to produce a firmer, more responsive feel and are often associated with greater power and pop.
Thicker cores — commonly around 16 mm — generally provide a softer response and can make it easier to control pace on dinks, resets, and other touch shots.
These are useful general guidelines rather than absolute rules. Core material, construction, paddle shape, weight, and face material all influence how a paddle ultimately performs.
Surface
The paddle face plays an important role in feel, ball response, and spin potential.
Modern paddles use a range of face materials and constructions, including carbon fiber, fiberglass, and composite materials. These can produce different levels of stiffness, responsiveness, and feel.
Surface texture can also help generate spin by increasing interaction between the paddle face and the ball. However, material alone doesn't determine how much spin a paddle will produce — surface construction, texture, paddle design, and the player's technique all matter.
For competitive play, it's important to use a paddle that meets the applicable equipment standards, as paddle surfaces and performance are regulated.
Comfort
Comfort describes how the paddle feels in your hand and at impact over the course of play.
Weight, balance, grip size, core construction, face material, and vibration all contribute to comfort. A paddle that's comfortable for one player may not feel the same to another.
Lighter or more maneuverable paddles can require less effort to move quickly, while heavier paddles may provide greater stability at impact. A thicker core can also produce a softer feel than a thinner core, although the complete construction of the paddle matters.
The best choice is one you can swing naturally and repeatedly without feeling like you're fighting the paddle.
Power & Control
Power and control describe how easily a paddle helps produce pace and how predictable that response feels when directing the ball.
Power-oriented paddles generally produce more pace with less effort, which can help on drives, serves, overheads, and attacking shots. Control-oriented paddles generally provide a softer, more predictable response that can make it easier to manage pace on dinks, drops, resets, and other touch shots.
No single specification determines whether a paddle is powerful or control-oriented. Weight, swingweight, core thickness, shape, face material, construction, and other design features all influence how the paddle responds.
Rather than thinking of power and control as opposites, the goal is to find the balance that suits your game. The right paddle should give you enough pace when you attack while still providing a predictable response when touch and placement matter.
