Polypropylene, foam, carbon fiber, fiberglass, and composite materials — what they are and how they can influence the way a paddle plays.

Core Materials

The core is the internal structure beneath the paddle face and helps determine how the paddle responds when the ball makes contact.

Polypropylene

Polypropylene is the most common traditional core material used in modern pickleball paddles.

It is typically formed into a honeycomb structure that keeps the paddle lightweight while providing support across the hitting surface.

Polypropylene cores are generally associated with a comfortable, controlled response and can be found in paddles across a wide range of performance categories.

Because polypropylene is used in so many different paddle designs, the material alone doesn't tell you whether a paddle will be powerful or control-oriented.

Foam

Foam is increasingly being used as a primary structural material in newer paddle cores.

Unlike traditional honeycomb cores, full-foam designs can use foam throughout much or all of the paddle's internal structure.

Depending on the design, foam cores can be engineered to influence power, stability, sweet spot, and feel. Different types and densities of foam can also behave very differently, so "foam core" does not describe one specific playing characteristic.

Hybrid Cores

Some paddles combine multiple materials or core structures rather than relying on a single material.

For example, a paddle may combine a traditional honeycomb structure with foam or other materials in different areas of the paddle.

These designs are intended to tune characteristics such as stability, power, control, and feel. Because construction varies significantly between manufacturers, the complete paddle design is more informative than the term "hybrid core" by itself.

Face Materials

The face is the outer hitting surface of the paddle and contributes to its feel, responsiveness, power, and interaction with the ball.

Carbon Fiber

Carbon fiber is one of the most common face materials used in performance pickleball paddles.

It is generally associated with a firmer, controlled, and connected response. Many carbon-fiber paddles also use textured surfaces designed to increase interaction with the ball and help generate spin.

You'll commonly see terms such as raw carbon fiber or specific carbon-fiber constructions used to describe these faces.

However, carbon fiber alone does not guarantee greater spin or control. The surface texture, layering, stiffness, and overall paddle construction all matter.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass is generally more flexible and lively than many carbon-fiber constructions.

It is commonly associated with easy power and a more responsive or "poppy" feel, which can help generate pace without requiring as much effort from the player.

The tradeoff can be a less controlled response compared with paddles designed around more control-oriented face constructions.

Composite & Hybrid Faces

Composite and hybrid faces use multiple materials or layers to create a specific combination of playing characteristics.

Manufacturers may combine carbon fiber, fiberglass, or other fibers and materials to target a particular balance of power, control, spin, durability, and feel.

Because "composite" can describe many different constructions, it should not be treated as a single type of paddle performance.

What Does This Mean for You?

Core and face materials help shape paddle performance, but no material automatically makes one paddle better than another.

Players looking for control and a more connected feel will frequently encounter polypropylene honeycomb cores paired with carbon-fiber faces.

Players looking for easy power and a livelier response may find more fiberglass or power-oriented composite constructions.

Newer foam and hybrid cores can be designed to provide different combinations of power, stability, control, and feel.

The most important thing is to evaluate the complete paddle rather than choosing based on a material name alone. Two paddles that both use carbon fiber and polypropylene, for example, can still play very differently because of differences in thickness, shape, weight, layering, and overall construction.
